SPAM numbers

December 28th, 2003 · No Comments

I’ve been on vacation for the past week with no email access. This meant that my email queued up for the longest period of time in the last decade. Here’s the numbers for those with an unhealthy interest in Perham-related trivia:

My email is scored by SpamAssassin with a few custom weightings (mostly to give the open relay lists and blacklists weight).

Obvious spam (count > 8) - 608
Probably spam (count > 3.8) - 97
Probably legit (count < 3.8) - 44
Week’s total email - 749

Of the 97 “probably spam”, none was legit.
Of the 44 “probably legit”, 23 were spam.

So 2.8% of my email was genuine last week. My false negative rate has gone up over the last two years as spammers have gotten smarter about how and what they send. Two years ago maybe 5% of my legit email was spam. Today it’s closer to 50%. At least the filters still catch the vast majority.
