A fellow from Time Warner Cable was walking around my neighborhood Thursday, offering deals to people with DirecTV dishes. I’m paying about $105/month for cable modem + TV so he offered to give me that + HD and their HD DVR for $93. Of course I was just about to sign when I realized the fine print said “for the first 12 months”. Natch. I signed anyways because I’m sick of not having decent HD programming. Doing the math, it appears that their normal price would be closer to $130 so I may be switching back to DirecTV after that first year.
Anyhow the installer came today and had me running in about an hour. I’ve been using the TWC HD DVR for the past few hours and I’m not happy. This thing is junk compared to the Tivo. I actually seriously considered buying a Tivo Series 3 today, only to find out that some of the TWC channels don’t work with the Tivo due to technical reasons, despite an FCC mandate.
I’ll use it for a few more weeks and see how it goes. I’m pretty sure I’ll be switching to something that works well with the Tivo. If that means just OTA HDTV, then so be it. I can’t live without two non-network channels (Speed Channel and Comedy Central, everything else is expendable) so I’m looking for some sort of solution which allows me to get those channels plus some HD while also using a Tivo.

Your mother says that HGTV and Food TV are also reguired. Otherwise, you’re off the Christmas card list. They don’t have to be in HD though.
