I bought a Canon SD700 IS to replace my Olympus 765 in preparation for the big Christmas vacation. I liked the 10x optical zoom of the Olympus but disliked the blurry photos and slow speed. I’ve played with the Canon today and so far am impressed with its features. It’s much faster to start up, transfer pictures and shoot. It’s also about 1/3 of the volume of the Olympus so it comfortably fits in a pocket. The optical zoom is 4x which sounds impressive for a compact camera but in practice it’s just enough to make the picture look like what you see with the naked eye. I guess this means its focal length is really short which gives it a very wide-angled picture normally. This is the only disappointing part of the camera so far but until we figure out a way around those pesky laws of physics, I guess some trade-offs will need to be made for a compact camera.
