At what point does the President need to do anything anyone says? As far as I can tell, the only reason the President follows any laws is to prevent outright impeachment. He adds signing statements to a good majority of the bills he signs “interpreting” them so the statement often neuters or even perverts the intent of the law. His Administration is responsible for much of the oversight to prevent nepotism, incompetence and outright evil intent (e.g. the Justice Dept’s firing of US Attys) and yet the oversight is simply squelched.
As far as I can tell, until the Congress is ready to actually start withholding money, the Executive Branch will continue to act without any restrictions at all.
Does anyone know why signing statements haven’t been tried in court? I have to assume that there are many lawsuits against the government for failing to enforce the law as written and yet the statements continue to this day.
