Hey, buddy. I know quite a bit about the Scottish Clans. Do you have a reason to believe your ancestors were a part of or swore allegiance to Clan Irvine? How far back can you trace your lineage? If it goes back to the same historical area as Clan Irvine, then your Perhams may indeed be related. If not, you could turn out to be completely unrelated to them… Food for thought, which I will glad discuss if you have questions.

Kyle, my mom’s family name is “irvin” which is a variant of irvine. Dad, do you have more specifics about our scottish background?

Looks like my dad’s side goes back to clan macfarlane. http://www.clanfinder.com/foreverscotland/clan_information.asp?clanCode=084

After I wrote that, I wondered if the Irvine part might come from a female line such as your mom! (Despite your predilection for them, I will leave out the obligatory “your mom” joke.) As for Perham being a “sept” or follower of MacFarlane, I couldn’t say. But I would take the “surname books” with a certain grain of salt there–unless you know you come from the same area as the MacFarlanes or have notable shared history. Interesting to read though!
