Life in the Slow Lane

Czech Notes

I’ve been walking all over Prague for the last two days and it hurts to move at this point so I figured I’d spend some time writing a blog posting with random notes on the trip so far.

The fellow at the head of the check-in line at CDG airport in Paris wanted to see my e-ticket. I did a double take and I showed him the print out of my email confirmation. He wasn’t happy but he let me through so I could ask the lady at the desk to punch my name into their computers. Everyone else had an official looking printout. I’m still flabbergasted. Why do I need to show you a print out when you can verify my ticket at the computer 10 ft away?

Apparently there are 5 different Bus 119s that go by the airport, cause we had to let 5-6 of them go past before a native told us this was the right one. Thus ensued a crowded bus ride to the subway.

Prague is basically a tourist city - it’s their main industry. Tourists are everywhere and the price gouging is in full effect. I had two beers (pictured on page 1) and they tried to charge me 305 crowns (about $19). I refused, noting that I had ordered the smaller size beer and I should be charged 225 ($14). In a native bar, it would be closer to 120. So yeah, Prague can be cheap for Europe but only if you avoid the tourist districts.

The Old Town section is wonderful in that you walk everywhere. There’s very little room for cars - basically delivery vehicles only.
