Upgrading your HDVR2 drive

Someone emailed me asking how to upgrade his HDVR2. Here's the essentials:

Adding a 120GB drive is pretty easy if you are comfortable mucking about
with your computer hardware. Doesn't take more than 5 minutes if you know
what you are doing.

You put the old 40GB drive and the new 120GB in at the same time, boot
from the mfstools CD-ROM and issue a single command. Unhook the 120GB,
put it in the HDVR2 and you are set.

The boot CD is here:

The command is:

mfsbackup -f 4138 -6so - /dev/hdX | mfsrestore -s 127 -xzpi - /dev/hdY

where X is the letter of the old drive and Y is the letter of the new
drive (the letter will be one of a, b, c, or d). The drives are listed when the CD boots - you can read the messages by waiting for the CD to finish booting and hitting Shift-PgUp.

If you have further questions, please ask them in the Tivo Upgrade Center
forum at the tivocommunity.com site.

Note that adding network support is considerably more difficult - I suggest spending a weekend reading if you really want to do it.
